Gov. Joe Lombardo announced the appointment of Britta Appel as director of the Governor’s Office of Science, Innovation, and Technology (OSIT) on Dec. 31, and Appel began the role on Jan. 5. The transition follows the tenure of former director Brian Mitchell and comes as Nevada presses to expand high-speed internet access across both urban and rural areas under the High Speed Nevada Initiative.

Appel brings long-standing experience within OSIT. She joined the office in 2015 as Nevada’s first broadband manager and was promoted to deputy director in 2022. Before joining the agency, she served as vice chair of the Broadband Task Force, led development of a state fiber trade policy in collaboration with the Nevada Department of Transportation, and worked as a policy and legal analyst for former Gov. Brian Sandoval. Her background also includes 17 years in legal practice and academic credentials of a Juris Doctor from Western State University College of Law and a bachelor’s degree in political science with an emphasis on public administration from California State University, Fullerton.

The governor framed the appointment as a continuity move aimed at keeping statewide broadband work on track. “Britta has shown exceptional leadership in broadband infrastructure planning and execution, and her in-depth knowledge of Nevada’s broadband landscape will ensure continuity and sustained progress,” Lombardo said in a press release. “I’m confident she will lead OSIT with professionalism, efficiency, and a strong commitment to serving Nevadans, ensuring the state reaches its connectivity goals.”

The administration’s announcement highlighted Appel’s operational strengths. “Appel brings extensive experience in statewide broadband planning, development and project management,” the press release stated. “Appel has proven expertise in driving broadband policy and legislative initiatives, coordinating with state and federal agencies, engaging stakeholders, and overseeing broadband compliance, monitoring, and reporting.” Appel expressed gratitude and a clear focus on closing digital gaps. “I am profoundly grateful to Governor Lombardo for this opportunity, and to Director Mitchell for his steadfast guidance,” Appel said in the press release. “After years of working to bridge Nevada’s digital divide, I am excited and committed to leading OSIT in delivering universal high-speed internet access through the High Speed Nevada Initiative.”

For Nye County, where many residents live far from urban centers, state leadership on broadband policy affects everyday life: access to telehealth, remote education, small-business operations, and public safety communications all depend on reliable connectivity. Appel’s experience with fiber policy and interagency coordination could influence how state programs prioritize routes, compliance, and reporting, and how they work with federal funding streams and private partners to close gaps.

The appointment also aligns Nevada with broader national and international trends that prioritize digital infrastructure as foundational to economic resilience and civic participation. How quickly those priorities translate into concrete upgrades in Nye County will depend on project timelines, funding allocations, and coordination among state agencies, federal partners, local governments, and service providers.
