Northern Nye County Hospital District Board Schedules Special Meeting in Tonopah
Two weeks after weighing a contract termination, the Northern Nye County Hospital District board held a special session April 2 in a region without a full-service hospital since 2015.

Without a full-service hospital since the Nye Regional Medical Center shuttered in 2015, northern Nye County residents rely on a district board whose decisions shape clinic hours, ambulance coverage, and emergency care access across hundreds of remote miles. That board convened a special session April 2 at 5:30 p.m. at its office at 101 Radar Road in Tonopah, stepping outside its regular meeting schedule roughly two weeks after a regular session at which trustees considered both a service contract termination and a new grant management agreement.
Special meetings are called when a board must act on matters that cannot wait for the next scheduled date, such as contract decisions, trustee vacancies, or urgent policy changes. For a district governing healthcare in communities like Tonopah, Gabbs, and Round Mountain, where the nearest inpatient hospital sits multiple hours away by car, those decisions carry immediate weight.
The board published its April 2 agenda on the Nye County website with specific provisions for remote public participation. Residents dialing in by phone encountered a 30- to 40-second audio delay and were instructed to press *5 to signal a desire to speak. The board called each commenter by name when recognizing them for public comment, a procedural step aimed at maintaining order during teleconference sessions.
Residents with disabilities who required accommodations were asked to contact the district's administrative office at 101 Radar Road in advance, either by email at nnchd.as@gmail.com or by calling 775-737-8184. Supporting documents related to the April 2 agenda are available through that same office. Under Nevada public records law, meeting minutes must be retained and are accessible upon request through the district or through the Nye County website.
Established by the Board of Nye County Commissioners after the Nye Regional Medical Center's closure, the district holds authority over the contracts, budgets, and service agreements that determine whether Tonopah-area residents have local access to care or must make a multi-hour drive to reach a hospital.
