Nye County commissioners voted to repurpose a portion of Kellogg Park for new recreational facilities, approving a proposal to install four dedicated pickleball courts and an ADA accessible playground. The decision, made at the commission meeting in December, replaces earlier plans for horseshoe pits and marks a shift toward amenities aimed at a growing segment of the community.

Kellogg Park sits at the southeastern corner of Squaw Valley Road and Bridger Street and has been under development since 2019. Current features include a dog park, a restroom facility, paved parking and lighting. County officials said the addition of pickleball courts and an inclusive playground will make the park a more active destination for families and for residents looking for new recreational options.

Local players and families urged the change at public meetings. "We’re super excited," local pickleball player Lynn Thomas told the commission on Tuesday, Dec. 16. "When I first proposed the pickleball concept to you all three years ago, there were just a handful of us. Today, we have grown exponentially, keeping pace with the national growth. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the country right now."

County staff emphasized that the switch from horseshoe pits to pickleball courts will not increase the project cost relative to previous estimates. Funding for the improvements was identified as coming from room tax revenue and park impact fees. Officials also noted that funds tied to development agreements with local subdivisions could be directed to Kellogg Park improvements, offering a locally sourced mechanism to cover construction and installation expenses.

For Pahrump residents the change offers several immediate advantages. Pickleball courts can host a range of ages and skill levels, creating opportunities for informal play and organized programming. An accessible playground will serve children of all abilities, addressing community priorities for inclusive public spaces. The redesigned park is likely to draw regular foot traffic and support local health and social goals as the town continues to expand its recreational infrastructure.
