Pahrump Valley Academy delays opening to 2027, cites unsuitable facility
Pahrump Valley Academy delayed its opening from August 2026 to August 2027 because it lacks a suitable facility, affecting local school choice and enrollment planning.

Pahrump Valley Academy announced it will push its planned opening back one year, deferring its August 2026 start to August 2027 because the school “does not yet have a suitable facility.” The academy framed the delay as a step to ensure it meets pre-opening requirements and can open “in a suitable facility reflective of the highest standards,” according to Executive Director Dr. Sable Marandi.
The announcement came in a press release issued Wednesday evening and follows a December milestone when the academy said it had received authorization from the Nevada State Public Charter School Authority to become Pahrump’s first authorized charter school. The academy’s public statement reiterated the revised target of opening in time for the 2027–2028 school year.
The State Public Charter School Authority’s application review for Pahrump Valley Academy shows a mix of readiness signals. Multiple application sections were rated “Meets the Standard,” including Meeting the Need, Mission and Vision, Targeted Plan, Parent and Community Involvement, Academic Plan, Promotion and Graduation Requirements, and Transformational Change. Some sections received more cautious marks: Curriculum and Instructional Design and Driving for Results were listed as “Approaches the Standard.” The authority’s report also noted that “during the resubmission process, the Committee to Form added additional milestones as part of Attachment 17 that will likely keep them on track to opening on time. However, concerns about the budget in the incubation year persist.”
Operational planning cited in the application includes basic non-academic services. The operations plan “includes plans for essential non-academic services such as food service, nursing, and school safety,” and the Committee to Form allocated $50,490 for food services as a conservative estimate based on projected enrollment and typical per-student costs at similar Nevada charter schools. The committee indicated it will solicit bids for a provider and update the budget once contracts or selections are finalized.
Pahrump residents looking for alternative or additional options should note that Desert Valley Academy Pahrump, a separate proposed tuition-free charter, is promoting a Fall 2027 opening for grades 6–8, pending approval. Desert Valley’s materials describe it as “a new middle school for rural Nevada families” and are collecting non-binding interest forms to demonstrate community demand.
For families and school planners, the deferral shifts timelines for enrollment, staffing, and facility approvals. Pahrump Valley Academy must secure a facility that meets state pre-opening requirements and resolve any incubation-year budget questions flagged in the application review before the new start date. Local education stakeholders and parents should expect updates on facility selection, final pre-opening approvals, and enrollment windows as the academy works toward its 2027 target.
