Pahrump Valley softball falls 3-2 to Coronado in playoff-style test
Pahrump Valley turned a 3-2 loss at Coronado into a postseason barometer, leaving Pahrump with a clearer read on what still needs sharpening before the bracket games begin.

Pahrump Valley’s narrow 3-2 loss at Coronado looked less like a setback than a measuring stick. The Lady Trojans waived pregame senior ceremonies and treated the road trip like a playoff rehearsal, then left Henderson with a defeat that snapped their 12-game winning streak and dropped them to 26-6.
The matchup carried real weight because Coronado came in at 11-8 and had won four of its previous five games. MaxPreps also noted the Cougars had just gone toe-to-toe with another top Nevada team, Palo Verde, in a 7-6 game, a reminder that Pahrump Valley was testing itself against a Class 5A program that had already been hardened by difficult competition.

The details mattered throughout. Freshman pitcher Jaycie Hayes worked through a tense fourth inning, and head coach Brian Hayes was making mound visits as the game tightened. Aspen Middaugh handled shortstop cleanly and also gave Pahrump Valley one of its best offensive lines, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and a run. Olivia Veloz was steady at second base, Evalenne Armendariz delivered with the bat, Mariah Gray added offense and Riley Saldana contributed in the field.
The loss ended the Trojans’ 12-game run, but it did not erase the broader picture. Pahrump Valley later improved to 27-6 and had won 13 of its last 14 games while allowing just 2.1 runs per game during that stretch, numbers that suggest the lineup and defense remained in shape even after the first stumble in nearly a month.

That timing matters in Nye County because the postseason was already looming. The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association listed the 3A Southern Region softball tournament for May 7-9 in Boulder City, with the 3A State Tournament set for May 14-16 in Spanish Springs. For a team built around a young core, including Hayes and Middaugh, the Coronado game offered something a rout could not: pressure, adjustments and a full night against a stronger opponent. In that sense, the Lady Trojans may have learned more from the 3-2 loss than they would have from an easy win.
