A pedestrian was killed late May 6 on State Route 160 just south of Winery Road, turning Pahrump’s main north-south corridor into the scene of another deadly nighttime crash. Nevada Highway Patrol said a northbound 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan struck the person about 10:26 p.m. while the pedestrian was walking in the travel lane.

Troopers said the pedestrian died at the scene. The Nye County coroner had not yet released the person’s identity as of the May 11 report, and no charges were pending. The driver remained at the crash scene and cooperated with investigators, according to Nevada Highway Patrol.

The case has been handed to the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Major Incident Reconstruction Team, which handles serious collisions that require detailed scene analysis. Investigators have not said whether speed, lighting, impairment or roadway design played a role, but the crash location on SR 160 puts the focus back on a corridor that carries commuters, shoppers and pedestrians moving through the heart of Pahrump.

That stretch has become a growing concern as Pahrump continues to expand from a largely rural community into a more urbanized town. Nye County planning documents describe State Route 160 and State Route 372 as the area’s main mobility corridors, while most other roads still have the narrow feel of two-lane rural pavements with minimal improvements. On SR 160, that growth has come faster than the pedestrian infrastructure many residents now say they need.

The fatal crash also fits a deadly spring pattern on Nye County roads. In February, the Nye County Sheriff’s Office handed out reflective vests and clip-on LED lights at Walmart in Pahrump, a move aimed at pedestrian and bicyclist safety after a run of deadly crashes. Sheriff Joe McGill has urged caution on dark, sidewalk-free roads as officials try to respond to repeated nighttime deaths.

Statewide, the problem is no smaller. Nevada recorded 113 pedestrian deaths in 2024, or 3.46 deaths per 100,000 people, among the highest rates in the nation. Nevada State Police’s Southern Command has also tracked a heavy year on the roads, saying it had investigated 25 fatal crashes resulting in 28 deaths so far in 2026.

For Pahrump, the latest death on SR 160 is more than another statistic. It is another reminder that the town’s busiest corridor is carrying more traffic, more foot travel and more risk, while the questions of lighting, crossing access, speed and visible enforcement remain urgent on the road locals use every day.
