Rising Gas Prices Squeeze Pahrump Commuters Traveling to Las Vegas
Gas prices in Nevada averaging $5 a gallon have pushed the daily commute between Pahrump and Las Vegas past $25 in fuel alone, a $140 monthly increase from just weeks ago.

The 64-mile stretch of Highway 160 connecting Pahrump to Las Vegas has always demanded something from commuters. Now it demands about $25.60 in gasoline every single day.
Nevada's AAA average gas price stands at $5.015 per gallon as of April 10, and for Pahrump residents who drive to Las Vegas for work, shopping, or medical appointments, that translates to roughly $512 a month in fuel costs alone for a five-day workweek commute at average fuel efficiency. That figure was closer to $371 just weeks ago, before prices began their rapid climb. The jump represents more than $140 in new monthly expenses for a household that may have little room to absorb it.
Las Vegas Valley gasoline prices crossed the $5 per gallon average for the first time since 2022 in early April, driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Gas prices hit several-year highs as a result of military operations in the Middle East and subsequent pressure on the Strait of Hormuz. As of April 1, the national average price of a regular gallon stood at $4.06. Nevada, which sources its gasoline from California oil refineries, absorbed the shock faster than most states. Nevada consumers are paying roughly $83 million more for gasoline since the Iran attacks began, a higher additional burden than in 17 other states.
The financial hit falls unevenly on Pahrump's population. Workers who commute to Las Vegas for jobs in construction, hospitality, or health care have no choice but to make the drive. Some Las Vegas-area commuters have shifted to public transit to offset rising costs, with park-and-ride locations like the Bonneville Transit Center in downtown Las Vegas seeing increased use in recent weeks. No comparable option exists for Pahrump residents: no scheduled bus service runs between Nye County and the Las Vegas Valley, leaving private vehicles as the only practical connection to the metro area.
Retirees on fixed incomes face a different kind of math. Unlike workers who must make the trip, retirees can reduce their Las Vegas runs, but doing so often means forgoing specialist medical appointments, services, and retailers not available in Pahrump. Many have already begun combining errands into fewer trips to limit the damage.
One factor has kept Pahrump's pump prices measurably below those on the other side of the Spring Mountains. Nye County voters overwhelmingly rejected a gas tax at the ballot in 2016, while in neighboring Clark County, a total of 67.9 cents is collected per gallon of gas. Filling up in Pahrump before heading to Las Vegas remains the smarter move, but it only buffers the cost of the Las Vegas end of the drive, not the commute itself.
Diesel fuel in Las Vegas hit an all-time high average of $6.47 per gallon, according to AAA. That peak affects Pahrump businesses that rely on freight deliveries, adding a secondary layer of cost pressure to a community already squeezed at the pump. Whether prices stabilize depends largely on how long the Middle East conflict continues to disrupt global oil shipments.
