Amazon plans new warehouse in Clay, expanding Onondaga County footprint

Amazon is planning another warehouse on Morgan Road in Clay, about a half-mile north of its existing massive site, deepening the company’s footprint in northern Onondaga County. The new building would sit close to the current Clay distribution center, which is described as one of the largest warehouses in the world.

That proximity matters because the company’s local operation is already built around a large industrial corridor in Clay. A second warehouse so near the first would put even more Amazon activity on the same road network, with more truck movement, employee traffic and pressure on surrounding neighborhoods than comes with a single building.

Amazon’s Syracuse-area hiring pages show the kind of work tied to that expansion. The company lists hourly jobs in Syracuse, and a Warehouse Associate posting for 6834 Kirkville Rd in East Syracuse shows pay up to $17.50 an hour. Amazon also already operates a delivery station presence in East Syracuse, adding another layer to its local logistics network.

The company’s footprint in upstate New York has already produced jobs at scale. Governing reported that a 3.8-million-square-foot expansion in upstate New York had hired 1,500 full-time workers, underscoring how quickly Amazon can turn a warehouse buildout into a major employer. The Clay project would extend that model deeper into Onondaga County.

That growth follows an aggressive local push that began years ago. In 2020, Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon and other local leaders pitched Central New York to Amazon, stressing, “We’re not New York City.” That message centered on lower costs and a different business climate, and it helped set the stage for Amazon’s original Clay warehouse. Now the company is moving to add another facility in the same part of the county, further entrenching one of the region’s biggest private employers.
