Five-star forward Ahmed Nur schedules late August visit to Syracuse

Syracuse has lined up an official visit with 2027 five-star power forward Ahmed Nur for Aug. 28-30, a clear sign that Gerry McNamara’s staff is trying to get in early on one of the fastest-rising big men in the class.

Nur, listed as a power forward-center, turned heads in Rock Hill, South Carolina, when he was named MVP of the NBPA Top 100 Camp after a June 9-11 run that brought roughly 120 of the country’s top high school prospects together. Syracuse’s staff watched him there, then extended an offer on June 12, moving quickly to secure a place in a recruitment that has widened far beyond the Midwest.

That speed matters for Syracuse, where the staff is still building a future frontcourt pipeline under McNamara. Nur has already taken an official visit to Purdue and an unofficial visit to Minnesota, and Washington has also scheduled an official visit, giving Syracuse competition from programs that have already established themselves as regular national players. For an Orange program trying to rebuild its next wave of roster talent, landing a prospect with Nur’s size and momentum would say as much about Syracuse’s recruiting reach as it would about the player himself.

The 6-foot-10 Nur is also changing settings before his senior season. He is transferring from Hopkins High School in Hopkins, Minnesota, to Bella Vista Prep in Arizona, a move that puts him at a national prep powerhouse. Bella Vista Prep was ranked No. 1 in the country by ESPN’s SC Next in April after winning the Chipotle National Championship, another step that should put Nur in front of even more high-major staffs and sharpen the competition for his commitment.

The profile has only grown with his production. NBADraft.net listed Nur at 6-foot-8 and 190 pounds and noted that he scored efficiently at the camp, averaging 14.8 points on 63.9% shooting while making 11 of 19 shots from 3-point range. That blend of size, touch and outside shooting is exactly the type of forward Syracuse has struggled to consistently secure in recent cycles, and it helps explain why the visit list now stretches from Purdue to Washington.

For Syracuse, the late-August trip is less about theater than access. If the Orange can stay in the race for Nur as his recruitment expands nationally, it would give the program a real piece to build around in the next few seasons. If not, the gap between Syracuse and the sport’s elite recruiting tiers will remain visible every time a prospect like Nur chooses another stop.
