Parents looking for a free, active outing for children had five YMCA locations to choose from across Onondaga County as Healthy Kids Day spread from Syracuse to Baldwinsville. The public event, held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., offered a low-cost way for families to get moving, meet neighbors and spend time away from screens.

The YMCA of Central New York opened the event at the Downtown Syracuse YMCA, 340 Montgomery Street; the Hal Welsh East Area Family YMCA, 200 Towne Drive in Fayetteville; the Fayetteville Manlius YMCA in Manlius; the North Area Family YMCA, 4775 Wetzel Road in Liverpool; and the Northwest Family YMCA, 8040 River Road in Baldwinsville. That countywide footprint mattered for families who do not live near downtown, making the program easier to reach from multiple neighborhoods instead of concentrating everything in one place.

Healthy Kids Day was free and open to the public, with the YMCA describing it as a day of hands-on activities and movement challenges meant to help children stay active, confident and thriving into the summer. The organization says the event is part of a national YMCA initiative that has brought families together for more than 30 years through free community programming that can include active play, nutrition education, STEM learning and the arts.

The event also reflected a broader local role for the YMCA beyond a one-day celebration. The organization tied Healthy Kids Day to a membership push, including a discounted membership promotion for the weekend. On its membership page, the YMCA says members get access to all YMCA of Central New York locations, along with group exercise classes, heated pools, fitness centers, discounts on camps and swim lessons, and free child care while adults work out.

For Onondaga County families, that mix of free programming and year-round services makes Healthy Kids Day more than a Saturday diversion. It creates a doorway into neighborhood facilities in Syracuse, Fayetteville, Manlius, Liverpool and Baldwinsville, while reinforcing the YMCA’s larger mission to strengthen spirit, mind and body. The organization also acknowledges the Onondaga Nation on the land where its facilities stand.
