A man died after being shot in a North Side home near Washington Square Park, and Syracuse police said they did not believe the shooting posed an immediate threat to the public.

Officers were called to the 200 block of Lemoyne Avenue at about 7:47 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, after a report of a shooting. Inside the residence, police found a 38-year-old man with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest. Officers gave immediate aid until American Medical Response arrived and took the victim to Upstate University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The shooting unfolded in one of Syracuse’s longtime residential areas, where Washington Square Park sits on the city’s North Side and the surrounding neighborhood is known for dense housing. The park is a familiar landmark for nearby residents, offering recreation space in a part of the city where families, tenants and homeowners live close together and where violence can ripple quickly through block-by-block routines.

The killing also came against the backdrop of a citywide decline in homicides. Syracuse recorded 14 homicides in 2025, the fewest in more than a decade and 56% below the pandemic-era peak. Even with that broader improvement, a single fatal shooting on Lemoyne Avenue is likely to draw close attention from North Side residents and city leaders as detectives work to determine what led to the gunfire and whether it was connected to any wider pattern of violence.
