Volunteers from Meals on Wheels of Eastern Onondaga County deliver more than food to more than 200 homebound neighbors every day. The nonprofit said those visits, along with the meals, are exactly what it took to Washington, D.C., as its executive director pressed for more federal support for senior nutrition.

The agency, which was established in 1974, said it serves Eastern Onondaga County residents with a volunteer-based operation that delivers more than 120,000 meals a year. It said 100% of donations stay with the local organization, a detail that matters in a county where food insecurity, inflation and the cost of aging in place continue to squeeze older adults and people with disabilities.

Meals on Wheels Eastern Onondaga County is one of four providers that contract with the Onondaga County Office for Aging to deliver home meals. The others are Kosher Meals on Wheels, Meals on Wheels of Syracuse, Inc. and North Area Meals on Wheels. County officials say the program includes nutritious meals, in-home assessments, nutrition counseling and other services, with deliveries made Monday through Friday by volunteers.

The county also says no eligible client is turned away because they cannot or will not contribute. Participants are asked to voluntarily give $4.00 for two meals, or $4.50 for two kosher meals. That local structure makes the federal funding debate immediate for families in Eastern Onondaga County, because the meals are tied not only to nutrition but to the wider network of support that helps older adults stay safe and independent at home.

At the national level, Meals on Wheels America said it urged Congress to set Older Americans Act nutrition funding at $2.285 billion for fiscal year 2027. The group said 27 local providers from 20 states joined the Washington advocacy effort during Older Americans Month, and said its network now delivers 244 million meals each year to 2.6 million older adults.

For Onondaga County, the stakes are simple. Stronger funding means more meals delivered, more home visits kept on schedule and more older adults able to remain in their homes instead of facing a deeper crisis when the next box of food does not arrive.
