Syracuse fire displaces four in apartment blaze on North State Street

Smoke poured from the fourth floor of a North Side apartment building Wednesday night before Syracuse firefighters knocked down a bedroom fire in about 10 minutes and cleared the building of occupants.

The call came in around 7:45 p.m. to 1022 N. State St., according to Onondaga County 911. Syracuse Fire Department Executive Deputy Chief Lucas Tortorella said crews arrived to find smoke coming from the apartment building’s fourth floor. Firefighters quickly tracked the blaze to a bedroom apartment and brought it under control, then stayed on scene to ventilate smoke from the building.

Four people who lived in the apartment where the fire started were displaced. Other tenants were evacuated during the response and were expected to be able to return shortly after firefighters finished their work. Two rooms in the apartment sustained fire and water damage.

The fire left the apartment building on North State Street with damage concentrated in the unit where the blaze began, while the rest of the building was treated as a temporary evacuation zone until crews could clear smoke and check conditions inside. The scene drew a heavy response from Syracuse Fire Department B-shift units, which handled the working fire and the follow-up ventilation.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation. No injuries were immediately reported.
