Syracuse man wounded in South Salina Street shooting, police investigate
A man in his 20s was shot in the 4400 block of South Salina Street and is expected to survive, as Syracuse police investigate a corridor already marked by deadly violence.

A Syracuse man in his 20s was wounded in a shooting in the 4400 block of South Salina Street, and police said he is expected to survive after being taken to Upstate University Hospital.
Syracuse police responded at about 8:33 p.m. on April 27 and found the man with a gunshot wound to the stomach and midsection, according to investigators. The Syracuse Police Department said the case remains active, and officers have continued to examine what led to the shooting in the South Side corridor.
Syracuse Police Capt. Matthew Malinowski said the investigation is ongoing. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the department’s Criminal Investigations Division at (315) 442-5222. No arrest information was released in the initial report.

The shooting adds to a troubling pattern around South Salina Street and Valley Plaza, a commercial strip that has repeatedly drawn police attention after gunfire. On June 16, 2024, Jamar Mack, 30, was killed at Valley Plaza in the 4100 block of South Salina Street. Another high-profile shooting there in August 2024 killed 25-year-old Jordan Freeman.
That history gives the latest shooting added weight for people who live, work, or travel through the area. The 4400 block and the nearby Valley Plaza corridor sit in one of Syracuse’s busiest South Side business stretches, where gun violence can quickly affect everyday movement, store activity, and a sense of safety along the street. Police have not said whether the latest shooting is connected to the earlier fatal cases, and the investigation remains open.
