A morning fire at the Champion Trailer Park left a 40-year-old woman dead inside a trailer at Lot 300 on state Route 5 in Elbridge, a loss that hit a small Onondaga County community where residents know the danger of a fire that moves fast and leaves little room to escape.

New York State Police said troopers and emergency crews responded at about 11:31 a.m. Friday, May 8, 2026, to 1275 State Route 5 for an active structure fire. A preliminary investigation found one female victim inside the residence, and no other individuals were found inside, police said. The cause of the fire was still undetermined as the State Police Forensic Identification Unit processed the scene.

Motorists were asked to stay away from the area and use alternate routes while investigators and fire crews worked the property. Later in the day, troopers said anyone else involved in the incident had been accounted for, and smoke was still smoldering at the mobile home even after flames appeared to be out.

The fire carries added weight in Elbridge because Champion Mobile Home Park has a longer local history as a resident-owned community. In December 2008, residents bought the park, then described as the first resident-owned manufactured home park in Central New York. The purchase was financed by the New York State Housing Finance Agency and ROC USA Capital, and the announcement at the time said the park had 168 households, with 124 already joined to the homeowners association.

That history makes Friday’s fatal fire even more immediate for neighbors who live in a setting where homes sit close together and evacuation can be difficult once flames take hold. Investigators have not said whether the blaze was accidental, whether smoke alarms were present, or whether the death is being treated as suspicious.

The larger public health picture is stark. The U.S. Fire Administration estimated 344,600 residential building fires in 2023, causing 2,890 deaths and 10,400 injuries. The National Fire Protection Association says home structure fires account for a large share of civilian fire deaths, and the U.S. Fire Administration says multiple-fatality residential fires are rare but account for a disproportionate share of residential fire deaths.

For Elbridge, the immediate focus remained on the woman found inside Lot 300 and on the unanswered questions around how the fire started. State police said the investigation was ongoing.
