Cornwall Central names Kate Polumbo assistant superintendent for instruction

Cornwall Central School District has named Cornwall Central Middle School Principal Kate Polumbo its next assistant superintendent for instruction, and she will begin July 1. Superintendent Megan Argenio announced the appointment, saying the district found the leader it wanted at home.

The move keeps one of Cornwall’s most familiar administrators in the central office as the district heads into the next school year. Polumbo has led Cornwall Central Middle School for years and has been part of the district’s day-to-day academic leadership, giving her an institutional knowledge base that extends beyond one building and into the broader instructional priorities of the district.

That matters because the assistant superintendent for instruction role is not ceremonial. It sits at the center of decisions on curriculum, classroom support and the academic direction set for teachers and students across Cornwall Central. By promoting from within, the district is choosing continuity at a time when families often look for stability in scheduling, teaching expectations and communication between schools and central administration.

Argenio’s own rise helps explain the timing. The district said she was officially appointed superintendent at the May 5, 2026 Board of Education meeting. She had served as assistant superintendent for instruction since July 2018 before becoming interim superintendent during the search for a permanent district leader. A board report later said her superintendent term runs from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2029.

Polumbo’s record at Cornwall Central Middle School also shows why she was a logical internal choice. The National Association of Elementary School Principals said she has served as principal there for nine years and focused on school culture, team-building and student opportunity. A district APPR document from 2021-22 also lists her as Cornwall Central Middle School principal, underscoring how long she has occupied a visible leadership post in the district.

The district’s administration listings also show assistant superintendent for instruction as a standing central-office position, reinforcing that this is a core academic job rather than a newly created title. For Cornwall Central, the appointment completes another step in a broader leadership reset, with Argenio moving into the superintendent’s office and Polumbo taking over the instruction portfolio that will help shape classrooms districtwide.
