Nine people were left without a home before sunrise Wednesday after fire damaged a multi-family residence at 357 Ann Street in the City of Newburgh, with the Hudson Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross stepping in to shelter two families that included children as young as 7.

The City of Newburgh Fire Department arrived at about 4:41 a.m. on March 11 to find a working fire burning along the side of the building that had already spread into the interior. Crews deployed two hand lines and, with support from mutual aid departments, were able to contain the blaze before it was fully extinguished. One firefighter was transported to a hospital for evaluation and later discharged.

Four departments provided mutual aid: the Stewart Air Guard Fire Department, Beacon Fire Department, West Point Fire Department, and the Dan Leghorn Engine Company in the Town of Newburgh.

The two displaced households comprised five adults and four children, ages 7, 14, 15, and 17. The Red Cross provided financial assistance for necessities including shelter, food, and clothing, and volunteers offered emotional support alongside comfort kits containing personal care items and stuffed animals for the children. Red Cross staff and volunteers are expected to remain available in the coming days to help the families continue their recovery.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
