A motorcycle rider was killed after a crash involving two SUVs at County Routes 51 and 8 in the Campbell Hall area of the Town of Hamptonburgh, a collision that shut down roads nearby and put one of Orange County’s busier local corridors under investigation.

The crash happened around 1:40 p.m. Monday, May 4, 2026, near the Horse & Sulky Pub & Grill area. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said one person died, but the victim’s identity had not been released as of the latest reports. Deputies said the investigation was continuing, and the sheriff’s office asked witnesses or anyone with information to contact its Investigation Bureau at 845-291-4033.

One local follow-up report said callers should reference case number RMS SO26001918. Another said roads in the immediate area were closed while emergency crews worked the scene. The location, at County Route 51 and County Route 8, connects the Campbell Hall area with nearby travel routes used by drivers moving through Hamptonburgh, Goshen, Montgomery and surrounding villages.

Because a motorcycle was involved, investigators are likely looking closely at visibility, turning movements, speed and right-of-way. Those details matter at intersections like this one, where even a brief mistake can turn deadly. The crash is also a reminder of how quickly a routine afternoon drive can become a fatal emergency on local roads that carry steady commuter and restaurant traffic.

The death comes against a broader traffic-safety backdrop in Orange County and across New York. New York State Department of Health materials say traffic-related injuries were the leading cause of injury-related death in Orange County in 2012 to 2014. State crash data compiled by the Institute for Traffic Safety Management & Research showed 4,681 personal-injury motorcycle crashes and 189 motorcyclist deaths statewide in 2024.

Orange County has also faced repeated concern over motorcycle fatalities in recent years. News 12 Hudson Valley previously reported that county officials were working to address a rise in fatal motorcycle crashes after at least five people were killed in the county in one year. That larger pattern gives added weight to Monday’s death in Campbell Hall, where deputies still have to determine exactly how the motorcycle and two SUVs came together at a single intersection.
