New Windsor Declares State of Emergency, Roads Closed to Non-Emergency Travel
New Windsor declared a state of emergency; town roads are closed to non-emergency travel during the snowstorm, affecting commutes and access to services.

Supervisor Bedetti declared a state of emergency for New Windsor in advance of the weekend snowstorm; the emergency is in effect from 12:01 AM on January 25 through 12:01 AM on January 27. During that window, travel on town roads is limited to emergency vehicles only and all non-emergency travel is prohibited to allow plows, tow crews, and emergency responders to work safely and without obstruction.
The declaration follows town code enforcement measures that take effect once snowfall reaches 2 inches. Per the New Windsor Police Department, parking on town roads is prohibited after two inches of snow have accumulated; vehicles left on roadways may be ticketed or towed. The police department also reminds residents that it is illegal to push or shovel snow from private property onto town roads, a practice that can interfere with clearing operations and create hazards for emergency traffic.
The town is operating a 24/7 warming center for residents who lose heat or power or who otherwise need shelter. Individuals should go to the New Windsor Police Lobby to be transported to the warming center, which will provide heat, Wi-Fi, water, and device charging. The warming center will remain open through the storm and for the extended period of cold weather expected during the week of January 26.
Residents are advised to complete storm preparations immediately. Fill or refill prescriptions, stock essential household supplies, and make arrangements for anyone who depends on daily medical equipment. If you cannot safely reach Town Hall and require assistance, contact the New Windsor Police Department at (845) 565-7000 or Supervisor Bedetti at (845) 629-1478.
Local enforcement of parking and road closures is intended to keep main arteries and local streets clear for plowing and emergency access. Town employees and contractors will be prioritized for road operations; residents should avoid obstructing crews and follow posted signage. Signing up for Town text alerts and following the Town of New Windsor on Facebook will provide the most up-to-date operational notices and severe weather advisories.
This emergency declaration concentrates municipal resources on immediate public safety and infrastructure clearance. For residents, the practical effect is restricted travel, a higher likelihood of towing or ticketing for improperly parked vehicles, and available municipal shelter and charging services if utilities fail. Continue monitoring official town communications; the emergency period ends at 12:01 AM on January 27 unless officials extend it based on storm conditions and public safety needs.
