New Windsor Man Fatally Shot in Neighbor Dispute, One Arrested

A neighbor dispute turned fatal inside The Grove townhouse complex on Hawthorne Way Wednesday morning, leaving one man dead and a second person in custody after what the Orange County District Attorney's Office called "a terrible situation involving anger and poor judgment with a firearm."

Town of New Windsor police received a call at approximately 8:59 a.m. on April 8, reporting shots fired in the area of 1404 and 1406 Hawthorne Way, a residential stretch inside The Grove, a townhouse community near Stewart International Airport. Officers arriving on scene found an adult male victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. New Windsor EMS initiated resuscitative efforts before the victim was transported to Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, where he was pronounced dead. His name was withheld pending notification of his family.

One person was taken into custody at the scene. Detectives from the New Windsor Police Detective Bureau assumed control of the investigation, with the New York State Police and the Orange County District Attorney's Office under DA David M. Hoovler providing assistance. Investigators taped off the area and processed the scene for evidence.

Authorities confirmed the shooting stemmed from a long-standing dispute between neighbors, ruling out random violence or any broader threat to the public. Police said the incident appears contained to the immediate block.

Town Supervisor Stephen Bedetti described it as the first fatal shooting in New Windsor in several years. In a public statement, he called it "a heartbreaking tragedy for our community" and said it stands as "a sobering reminder of how quickly disputes can escalate." Bedetti noted he believes both families involved have children, a concern shared by a neighbor who declined to be identified but pointed to the number of children living throughout The Grove.

Hoovler's office's early involvement signals that prosecutors are treating the case as a potential criminal homicide. With one arrest already made, formal charges and arraignment proceedings are expected to follow once investigators complete their evidentiary review.
