New Windsor Man Missing Since January Found Dead in Wooded Area
Jose Santacruz, 60, left his Oakwood Terrace home for a walk on Jan. 21 and was found dead in nearby woods 44 days later.

Jose Santacruz walked out of his home on Oakwood Terrace in New Windsor on January 21 and left everything behind: his cell phone, his wallet, his keys. He was 60 years old. He did not come back.
Nearly seven weeks later, on March 6, the New Windsor Police Department located his remains in a wooded area near his residence with assistance from the New York State Forest Rangers. The department publicly announced the discovery on March 11.
The search that preceded the find was extensive and hampered by the winter. Police reviewed hours of security camera footage, asked neighbors to check their own cameras, canvassed the area on foot, and deployed drones, UTVs, and search dogs. Severe winter weather complicated those efforts throughout the weeks-long operation. Agencies that assisted included State Police, the Town of Cornwall Police, New Windsor Fire Department, Vails Gate Fire Department, New Windsor EMS, and the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center.
An autopsy was performed on March 9. Final results were still pending as of March 11, and authorities said there are currently no signs of foul play, though the death remains under investigation.

New Windsor Police Chief Dan Valeri addressed the community after the announcement. "The discovery of Mr. Santacruz's remains brings a difficult chapter to a close for his loved ones and our community," he said. "While this is not the outcome anyone hoped for, we are grateful to the many agencies, volunteers, and community members who assisted in the search and investigation over the past several weeks. Our thoughts remain with Mr. Santacruz's family during this incredibly difficult time."
The investigation will remain active until final autopsy and toxicology results are received.
