Newburgh police investigate early morning shooting near Washington’s Headquarters

City of Newburgh police were investigating an early morning shooting near Liberty Street and East Parmenter Street that left at least one person injured and sent that victim to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital. The gunfire erupted around 1:30 a.m. on June 28, and by midmorning police had not announced any arrests.

Neighbors said they heard seven or eight shots before seeing people flee the area. Detectives sealed off the block with crime-scene tape, photographed the scene and collected evidence, with numerous markers scattered along the roadway in a compact stretch of city street where any violent incident is immediately visible to nearby residents and businesses.

Two stabbing victims also arrived at the hospital around the same time as the shooting victim, but authorities had not said whether the incidents were connected. That uncertainty left the morning’s violence unsettled, with investigators still trying to determine whether they were dealing with one event, linked emergencies or separate attacks that unfolded within minutes of one another.

The shooting happened directly across from Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. New York State describes the site as the nation’s first publicly owned historic site; it opened on July 4, 1850, and preserves the house George Washington used as headquarters for more than 16 months. The contrast between a historic civic landmark and a taped-off crime scene sharpened the sense of disruption on a block that draws constant local and visitor traffic.

The case also fit into a recent run of gunfire in Newburgh. Mid Hudson News reported a separate shooting at Liberty Street and South William Street on June 1, 2026, and another burst of at least 15 rounds near Broadway and Oak Street on May 28, 2026. New York’s Gun Involved Violence Elimination initiative tracks shooting activity in participating police departments, including Newburgh, and Orange County officials have described the city’s Non-Fatal Shooting Task Force as a joint effort involving City of Newburgh police, Orange County District Attorney personnel and analysts from the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center.

For residents near Liberty and East Parmenter, the immediate questions were simple: who was shot, whether anyone else was hurt, and whether the violence would spread farther into the day. Police were still sorting through evidence on the block as those answers remained unresolved.
