Orange County driver gets probation in fatal Route 211 crash case

A fatal Route 211 crash in the Town of Wallkill has ended with probation for the Orange County driver, leaving a community death on one of the county’s busiest roads punished by supervision rather than prison.

Faith Illenberg, 58, received five years of probation after previously pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter. She had already spent eight months in Orange County Jail before sentencing, closing the criminal case with time served behind bars and a probation term in the community.

The crash happened at about 9:30 a.m. on April 7, 2022, at State Route 211 and Hidden Drive. Town of Wallkill police said Illenberg was driving eastbound when she veered into the westbound lane and caused a head-on collision with a vehicle driven by Jean Kallus, 57.

Both drivers were trapped and had to be extricated by members of the Mechanicstown Fire Department and Montgomery Fire Department before being taken to Garnet Health Medical Center. Kallus was later transferred to Westchester County Medical Center, where she died on April 10, 2022.

Police arrested Illenberg on March 15, 2023, and initially charged her with criminally negligent homicide, a felony. The Town of Wallkill Police Department said the case was prosecuted by the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office with assistance from New York State Police.

The case also moved through the appellate courts. In 2024, Illenberg sought a change of venue from Orange County to Bronx County or another county, but the Appellate Division denied that motion on Sept. 25, 2024.

Kallus’s obituary said she was 57 and had practiced law for more than 30 years, including more than 32 years with the Legal Aid Society of Orange County. That background gave the loss particular weight in Orange County, where Route 211 cuts through a busy commercial corridor in the Town of Wallkill and a center-line crossing can turn a routine morning drive into a deadly collision.

The sentence now leaves the case in its final punishment phase, with probation replacing a long prison term in a crash that took the life of a respected local attorney and became a painful reminder of the risks on Route 211.
