A bogus social media claim that teenagers planned a mass "takeover" of the Galleria at Crystal Run brought a coordinated law enforcement response to the Town of Wallkill on Sunday, March 22, with Wallkill police, state troopers, Orange County Sheriff's deputies, and mall security all deploying to the shopping center as a precaution.

Social media posts claiming teens were going to take over the Galleria at Crystal Run proved bogus, but law enforcement made their presence known regardless. The mall, which has a policy requiring minors to be accompanied by an adult, turned away several unsupervised youths as a precaution.

Wallkill Police Chief Robert Hertman said the response was not without friction. Four youths gave officers a tough time and were charged with trespassing, according to Mid-Hudson News. That account conflicts with other reporting that stated no arrests occurred in Wallkill; the discrepancy has not been independently resolved, and the Wallkill Police Department has not issued a formal statement clarifying whether the four were formally arrested or issued trespass notices. The chief also emphasized that the law enforcement community has an excellent working relationship with Galleria management and there were no problems despite the bogus social media post.

No arrests or injuries were reported in Wallkill, and the mall operated normally following the increased police presence, according to iHeartMedia Hudson Valley.

Sunday's response fits a pattern that has law enforcement across the region on heightened alert. Westchester County police officers have been monitoring social media for plans about so-called "teen takeovers," and recent events like the gathering at Bay Plaza in the Bronx resulted in arrests and injuries, prompting officials to act quickly to prevent further disruptions. The "takeover" trend involves large groups of teens organizing through social media to gather in public spaces, sometimes resulting in property damage and safety concerns.

Law enforcement responded after reports of similar incidents elsewhere in New York and neighboring states. Authorities treat each social media post as credible until proven otherwise, citing public safety as the top concern, a posture that even when threats turn out to be false can require significant police resources to manage.

Officials encourage anyone with information about planned gatherings to contact law enforcement through tip lines or mobile apps.

The Galleria at Crystal Run, located in the Town of Wallkill, is the second-largest mall in New York's Hudson Valley region and has been the site of previous security incidents requiring multi-agency responses. Sunday's hoax added to that history, even as the mall itself never missed a beat: shoppers moved through normally once the extra patrol presence was in place, and no emergency closures were ordered.
