Charlie Wylie of Port Jervis and Marco Futia of Wallkill were named the top female and male wrestlers of the year, respectively, by the Friends of Section 9 Wrestling association at its annual awards dinner on Tuesday, March 25.

The two seniors capped seasons that were among the most decorated in their schools' histories. Wylie won her second consecutive state title, earning a technical fall over Connetquot's Katie Porcelli in the 107-pound final at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls wrestling championships. The senior finished 30-1 on the season, making quick work of four opponents and requiring only 1:47 of total mat time, with three wins by technical fall and a semifinal pin.

Wylie had entered the season as the reigning state champion at 107 pounds and the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler, ranked No. 3 in the nation at 105 pounds by MatScouts, and had committed to wrestle at Lehigh University. She is the first female in Section 9 wrestling history to earn 100 career victories.

Futia's path to the award was built on a season of relentless pursuit. The five-year varsity wrestler finished 49-1 and was the No. 1 seed at 132 pounds at the state Division I championships in Albany. He set Wallkill's all-time wins record, surpassing Zac Mills' 164 victories set in 2004, and finished his career with a record of 194-28.

Futia won the Section 9 championship by pinning Middletown's Anthony Noboa in 1:16. He is Wallkill's first three-time state qualifier. His coach, Anthony Ng, saw the potential coming long before the awards dinners and record books. Ng, who also coached Marco's older brothers Jerome and Rocco, recalled that Futia rarely attended youth practices and never did extra work outside of school, yet was already winning matches and holding his own against elite year-round wrestlers.

Futia became the first wrestler in Wallkill's history to win a state championship. Wylie and Futia's recognition by the Friends of Section 9 Wrestling caps a landmark season for Orange County high school wrestling, with both athletes graduating as two of the most accomplished competitors the section has ever produced.
