Poughkeepsie man gets 20 years for armed Newburgh gas station robbery
A masked gunman fired inside a Route 9W gas station, stole $1,400 and drew a 20-year prison term after police tied him to the robbery.

A masked gunman who fired a round past a cashier at a Town of Newburgh gas station and fled with $1,400 on Route 9W was sentenced to 20 years in state prison, a punishment that reflects both the danger inside the store and Hans Altidor’s record of violent robberies.
Altidor, 56, of Poughkeepsie, pleaded guilty in Orange County Court on Feb. 4 to first-degree robbery. He was sentenced April 30 to 20 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision, after prosecutors said he had two prior convictions for gunpoint robberies.
Prosecutors said the robbery happened at about 2:09 a.m. on July 22, 2025, when Altidor entered the gas station wearing a mask and holding a pistol. He pointed the weapon at the cashier, demanded money, fired a single round into the wall, then went behind the counter and took cash from the register before running out the front door.
The case was strengthened by police work that followed the robbery. Town of Newburgh police identified the vehicle Altidor used, and a judicially authorized search warrant at his residence recovered the gun, the clothing worn during the crime and the stolen cash wrapped in a latex glove. Altidor later admitted to police that he had committed the robbery.
Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler said the sentence was meant to keep repeat violent offenders away from the public for as long as possible. He also thanked the Town of Newburgh Police Department and the New York State Police for their work on the case. Senior Assistant District Attorney Michael Purcell prosecuted the case.
