SUNY Orange reported a 7.4% year-over-year increase in spring headcount and said the college has posted higher enrollment in 13 consecutive academic sessions, the college said in a Feb. 23, 2026 news release from Middletown. The release said overall headcount has surged 27.5 percent since the 2022 low point, an increase of 886 students, and that full-time-equivalent enrollment has jumped 32.1 percent over the same span, with record-setting Winter session enrollment for the third straight year leading into Spring 2026.

Local reporting highlights sizable demographic shifts since Spring 2022: Mid-Hudson News noted Hispanic student enrollment up 51.1 percent and Black student enrollment up 57.5 percent since Spring 2022, while continuing students rose 25.5 percent and adult students increased 25.0 percent in that span. SUNY Orange serves students across two campuses in Middletown and Newburgh and has tied the recent gains to both recruitment and retention efforts.

Dr. Erika Hackman, SUNY Orange provost, linked the growth to campus programs and external recognition: “Growing enrollment is a sign that students value their education and believe SUNY Orange can help them reach their goals. We are innovating and transforming the SUNY Orange Experience for our students. Our selection as a finalist for the national Bellwether Award shows the cutting-edge innovation by our faculty. We are helping new students get acclimated to college life more quickly and providing a full range of support programs that meet all students where they are. These are among the reasons SUNY Orange ranks fifth among SUNY community colleges in student retention, and why we are continuing to show enrollment growth semester after semester,” she said on the college news page.

President Dr. Kristine Young described shifts in recruitment tactics that college leaders credit for part of the rebound, telling Mid-Hudson News that SUNY Orange “continues to build momentum by attracting new students and retaining current students.” Young said outreach has moved beyond high-school visits: “Maybe a generation ago you might only think of going into the high schools and trying to talk with students during their senior year in high school about what their next will be,” she said. “Now, you might find a lot more on social media. You might find us in the workplace. We talk much more about how education links to careers, not just jobs, but careers.”

Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus congratulated the college leadership, saying, “Congratulations to Dr. Young and the team at SUNY Orange on their successful efforts to continually increase enrollment. It’s great to see local and out-of-county students taking advantage of this educational gem right here in our County.” SUNY Orange said the current growth streak traces to a 2.2 percent uptick in Spring 2023 that ignited recovery from pandemic-era declines.
