Temple Sinai prom formalwear event helps Orange County students save money
Hundreds of Orange County students found free prom dresses and suits at Temple Sinai, cutting a major spring expense for families.

Temple Sinai’s free prom formalwear giveaway in Middletown kept taking pressure off Orange County families facing another costly spring milestone. Students walked out with dresses, suits and accessories they would otherwise have to buy themselves, making prom a little more affordable in a season when every dollar matters.
The second and final formalwear event of the year ran from noon to 4 p.m. at Temple Sinai, 75 Highland Avenue in Middletown, drawing another round of interest from students across the county. Organizers said any student was welcome, and no ID or proof of financial need was required, a simple policy that kept the event open to families who may be balancing prom costs against rent, groceries, gas and other household expenses.
Josephine Bloomfield said the effort began about 20 years ago with roughly 30 dresses and suits collected with the Minisink Valley Rotary Club. Since then, it has grown into a large-scale community effort that now brings in hundreds of items and a wide volunteer network. About 600 items were donated in 2025, including accessories from Macy’s at the Galleria at Crystal Run, and students also had new pieces from Nordstrom to choose from.
The event’s draw has only grown. In 2022, close to 300 young men and women from across Orange County came to Temple Sinai for free formalwear. A later event offered more than a thousand dresses and suits, and another report said 174 students received a free outfit at a Sunday giveaway. Over the years, students have even traveled from outside Orange County, including from Maine in one year, underscoring how much demand exists for an event that asks nothing in return.

The giveaway has also become a local volunteer project that stretches well beyond the synagogue. Temple Sinai Men’s Club members, United Presbyterian Church volunteers and others have helped organize the event alongside Ed and Josephine Bloomfield. Public officials including Orange County Legislator Janet Sutherland, Middletown Mayor Joe DeStefano, Assemblywoman Paula Kay, Wawayanda Town Supervisor Denise Quinn and Orange County Legislator DeShanda Carter have all volunteered, reinforcing that the event has become a shared community effort.
For many families, the appeal is practical and immediate. Prom can mean a dress or suit, shoes, jewelry and accessories, costs that can add up quickly. At Temple Sinai, the giveaway turned that burden into a day of choice, confidence and relief, with students leaving ready for prom night without the price tag that often comes with it.
