Woman Fatally Shot in South Blooming Grove, Suspect Held
A 45 year old woman was found with a gunshot wound at a South Blooming Grove home December 23, and a cohabitant was taken into custody and charged with murder. The case highlights local concerns about intimate partner violence, gun access, and the strain on emergency and victim support services in Orange County.

On December 23 at about 4:41 p.m. troopers from the Monroe and Middletown areas responded to a residence on Heights Trail in the Village of South Blooming Grove after receiving a report of an unconscious adult female with an apparent gunshot wound. Officers located the 45 year old victim, later identified as Tanzanica Dickerson, performed life saving measures, and transported her to Garnet Health Medical Center where she was later pronounced deceased.
The preliminary investigation indicated the victim and a cohabitant were involved in a verbal argument that escalated. Investigators from the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the Forensic Investigation Unit, and the Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene. An autopsy by the Orange County Medical Examiner determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound and noted evidence of blunt force trauma, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.
Joseph M. Pennyfeather III, 44, of South Blooming Grove was taken into custody at the scene. He was arraigned in Middletown City Court on charges of Murder in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree and was remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail. He was scheduled to appear in Town of Blooming Grove Court on December 29.
This killing raises immediate public health and community safety questions for Orange County. Homicides linked to domestic disputes place pressure on emergency medical services and trauma care, and compound long standing needs for accessible violence prevention, mental health support, and survivor services. The presence of blunt force trauma alongside a gunshot wound underscores the violent escalation that can occur in cohabiting relationships, and speaks to gaps in early intervention and safe housing options for people at risk.
Neighborhoods near Heights Trail are left grappling with shock and grief, and law enforcement is asking anyone with information to come forward to aid the investigation. Tips can be directed to the State Police Monroe barracks at (845) 344 5300. As the case proceeds through the courts this week the incident will likely factor into local discussions about gun policy, bail practices, and funding for domestic violence prevention and victim assistance in Orange County.
