Few places in Orange County carry the weight that West Point does. Sitting on a granite bluff above the Hudson River, the United States Military Academy is simultaneously an active military installation, a working college campus, a world-class museum, and one of the most historically significant pieces of real estate in American history. For residents of Newburgh, Middletown, Goshen, Monroe, and Port Jervis, it sits close enough to visit on a weekday afternoon yet contains enough to fill an entire weekend. Getting the most out of a trip, however, requires planning.

Before You Go: Access, IDs, and the Visitor Control Center

West Point is not a public park you can simply wander into. As an active U.S. Army installation, it operates under real security protocols, and the rules shift depending on why you are visiting and when. The starting point for every civilian visit is the Visitor Control Center, located at 2107 New South Post Road in Highland Falls, just outside the main gate.

To receive an unescorted visitor pass, you will need a state-issued driver's license that is compliant with the Real ID Act of 2005. If your license is not Real ID compliant, bring an alternative: a U.S. passport or passport card, a permanent resident card, or other federally recognized identification. Visitors without qualifying identification may receive a shorter-duration pass, so check your license before you leave home.

Vehicle searches are possible, and certain items, including weapons and drones, are prohibited on post. For special events, the requirements tighten further:

  • Home Army football games at Michie Stadium: all fans age 17 and older must present a valid U.S.-issued ID to enter post, though no full visitor pass is required for game-day access only.
  • Graduation weekend and large ceremonies: expect heightened screening, restricted parking, and significantly heavier traffic on approach roads.
  • Eisenhower Hall events and ticketed sporting events: pre-registration or advance tickets are often required.

Always check West Point's official visitor and events pages before traveling, since access procedures can change with little public notice.

Getting There from Orange County

West Point sits along the Hudson roughly 20 to 30 minutes from most Orange County population centers under normal traffic conditions. From Newburgh, the drive is short and straightforward. From Middletown or Goshen, plan for slightly longer travel and factor in traffic, particularly on fall football Saturdays when Michie Stadium draws large crowds and the approach roads back up well before kickoff.

Use the official visitor parking lots and follow signposted routes on post. For major events, prepaid parking is often required; arriving early is not optional, it is essential. If you plan to pair a West Point visit with a stop in downtown Newburgh or a trip across the Hudson to Beacon, it is worth checking ferry schedules in advance and considering whether off-post parking near the waterfront makes more logistical sense for your itinerary.

Where to Spend Your Time on Post

West Point Museum

The West Point Museum, located at 2110 New South Post Road, is the oldest and largest military museum in the country and the most accessible destination for first-time visitors. It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and is closed on Mondays. Admission is free. The collections span early American military history through modern exhibits, covering weapons, uniforms, maps, and artifacts from every major conflict in U.S. history. It works well for families; the exhibits are organized clearly enough for children and substantive enough for adults with a serious interest in military history.

Trophy Point and the Hudson River Overlook

Trophy Point is one of the most photographed spots in Orange County, and justifiably so. Cannons captured from enemy forces throughout American history line the overlook, and the panoramic view of the Hudson River stretching north and south is exceptional at nearly any time of year. It is an outdoor space, freely accessible during normal visiting hours, and requires no special clearance beyond your visitor pass. Photographers, in particular, will want to time arrival for morning light or the golden hour before sunset.

The Cadet Chapel and The Plain

The Cadet Chapel, a Gothic Revival structure that dominates the West Point skyline, is one of the architectural centerpieces of the campus. The Plain, the large open parade ground at the heart of the Academy, is where formal ceremonies and cadet reviews take place and offers additional views of the surrounding Hudson Highlands. Interior access to the chapel and some adjacent buildings may be restricted when cadet activities are in session, so treat any interior visit as a bonus rather than a given, and always defer to posted signage and instructions from security personnel.

Army Black Knights Athletics

Army football at Michie Stadium is a singular experience. The stadium opened in 1924, holds up to 38,000 spectators, and sits at an elevation of 335 feet above sea level overlooking the Hudson River and the Neo-Gothic architecture below. Sports Illustrated once ranked it the third-best sports venue of the 20th century. Beyond football, Army fields competitive programs in basketball and other varsity sports throughout the academic year. Tickets for football games sell out for marquee matchups; check the official Army athletic site well in advance, particularly for rivalry games.

Etiquette and Common-Sense Rules

A visit to West Point is not the same as visiting a civilian tourist site, and being mindful of that distinction matters. Cadets are students under military discipline, and the campus around you is a functioning college during the academic year. Remain respectful of cadets and staff, follow all posted signage, and comply immediately with any instructions from security or military personnel.

Photography is permitted in most exterior areas, including Trophy Point, the parade grounds, and the museum exterior, but is restricted near certain facilities. When in doubt, ask at the Visitor Control Center or check signage at the specific location. Do not enter any area marked as restricted, even if it appears unguarded.

For families bringing children to large events such as graduation parades or football games, be prepared for significant crowd noise and large gatherings. The outdoor spaces are expansive, but peak events draw thousands of visitors.

Why West Point Is Part of Orange County's Identity

The Academy's connection to the surrounding county runs deeper than tourism. West Point employs civilian staff from Newburgh, Middletown, and communities across the region. Orange County families have produced cadets for generations, and the Academy's legislative profile, including recognition events like West Point Day at the State Capitol, reflects its standing in state civic life. Local veterans' organizations, school programs, and civic groups maintain ongoing partnerships with the Academy.

For those who have grown up in Orange County without ever visiting, the combination of free museum admission, exceptional river views, and the sheer historical density of the grounds makes it a straightforward choice for a day trip. The key is preparation: confirm your ID, check the event calendar, and arrive early enough to navigate the gate and parking without frustration.
