2026 Bicycling Around Minnesota tour brings nearly 300 riders to Otter Tail County

Nearly 300 cyclists from 23 states will roll into Otter Tail County for the 2026 Bicycling Around Minnesota tour, and the money they spend is likely to move well beyond the campground. With overnight stops in Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls and Perham, the four-day ride will bring tents, support vehicles, meals, repairs and sightseeing stops into Minnesota lake country.

The tour is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 13 through Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026, under the “Heart of the Lakes” route branding. Bicycling Around Minnesota starts and ends in Detroit Lakes, with riders spending two nights there before moving on to Fergus Falls and then Perham. The ride is organized as a supported tour, meaning participants travel with logistical backing instead of carrying everything themselves, a setup that tends to funnel spending into hotels, campgrounds, restaurants, convenience stores, bike shops and attractions along the route.

That local impact matters in a county where visitor traffic is closely tied to summer business. Riders and support crews often need breakfast before rollout, lunch during the day, dinner after they arrive, plus water, snacks, tire fixes and last-minute gear. Even people who are only in town for one evening can create a visible bump for downtown restaurants and retailers, especially in places such as Fergus Falls and Perham where a single overnight stop can concentrate hundreds of visitors at once.

The participant mix is also broad. The field ranges in age from 24 to 84, and more than 100 riders are first-timers, suggesting the event is still drawing newcomers as well as longtime cyclists. For Otter Tail County, that means the tour is not just a scenic pass-through for a core group of bike tourists. It is a temporary traveling population with real purchasing power, arriving during a peak season when small-town businesses depend on every room, meal and fuel stop.

Bicycling Around Minnesota has promoted bicycle safety and tourism in Minnesota since 2006 and now says it supports the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The alliance describes this stretch of west-central Minnesota as “pure lake-country charm,” with quiet rural roads, gentle glacial contours and sparkling water in every direction. The route will showcase that landscape to riders coming from across the country, while local tourism groups such as Visit Detroit Lakes and the Perham Area Chamber of Commerce have also promoted the ride.

Registration closed Sunday, Aug. 2, but the economic lift will arrive when the wheels start turning. For four days, Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls and Perham will each host part of a moving crowd that turns a cycling tour into a countywide business event.
