A fast-moving house fire in Audubon destroyed nearly all of one family’s belongings and killed one of their cats, even though no injuries were reported and firefighters kept the blaze from spreading farther.

The fire broke out Monday night, May 11, 2026, in Audubon, Minnesota, in Otter Tail County. The Audubon Fire Department was called to the scene and contained the blaze, but the home was badly damaged by the time crews finished their work.

For the family inside, the loss went far beyond the structure itself. One report said nearly all of their belongings were destroyed, leaving them with the immediate challenge of replacing clothing, household items and everything tied to daily life after a house fire. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

In the hours after the fire, the City of Audubon opened Audubon City Hall as a donation drop-off site for the affected family. Residents who want to help can bring items or supplies directly to Audubon City Hall, where the city has organized the collection point as the community’s first response to the loss.

The fire adds to the practical strain that follows a house loss in a small community: a family displaced overnight, a home left unusable and a long recovery ahead even after the flames are out. With the cause still unclear, the immediate focus in Audubon has shifted from the fire itself to the people trying to rebuild after it.
