New York Mills senior earns top Minnesota FFA state honor
Weller of New York Mills earned one of Minnesota FFA’s highest honors, joining just 377 state degree recipients after years of ag classes and supervised work.

A New York Mills senior earned one of Minnesota FFA’s top honors, joining a statewide class of just 377 members who received the State FFA Degree at the April 20-21 convention in the Twin Cities. In Otter Tail County, where agriculture still shapes both the economy and the culture, the recognition carries weight far beyond a line on a resume.
Weller’s State FFA Degree reflects years of work in agricultural education, leadership and supervised experience, not a single standout season. Minnesota FFA calls it the top state-level honor in the organization, and the requirements are demanding: members must first earn the Chapter FFA Degree, stay active in FFA for at least two years and complete at least two years, or 360 hours, of agricultural education.
Candidates also must show they have put knowledge into practice. Minnesota FFA requires at least $2,000 earned and productively invested, or 600 hours worked, in supervised agricultural experience, along with leadership skills that include parliamentary procedure, a six-minute speech and service as an officer or committee chairperson. Students must keep a satisfactory scholastic record, help plan and complete chapter activities, take part in 10 activities above the chapter level and complete at least 25 hours of community service.
That long checklist is what gives the honor meaning in a rural community like New York Mills. It signals that the student did not just participate in FFA meetings, but built technical skills, practiced leadership and followed through on responsibilities over time. For schools such as New York Mills High School, the award also highlights how agriculture programs prepare students for careers in farming and in other fields that value discipline, public speaking and practical problem-solving.
Minnesota FFA said more than 6,000 FFA members and guests took part in the 2026 state convention, which was held at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campuses and the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul. The convention included general sessions, competitive events, educational tours, leadership workshops and visits with colleges, placing Weller’s accomplishment among the organization’s largest annual gatherings.
For New York Mills, the honor is a reminder that student success in FFA is built the same way much of rural life is built, through steady work, measured progress and a record of doing the job well.
