New York Mills is shaving time at the right moment, with 22 personal bests already giving the Eagles a late-season boost before the section true team meet and the rest of the postseason.

That push mattered in a sport where small gains can decide whether a Class 6A team stays alive in May. New York Mills, listed by the Minnesota State High School League with an enrollment of 197, has been using recent meets to sharpen marks before the section true team format, which puts a premium on depth as much as star power.

The Eagles went to United North Central in Sebeka on Tuesday and then to Wadena-Deer Creek on Thursday, giving athletes two more chances to test themselves against different fields and conditions. The schedule also fit the rhythm of a fast-moving season, with the MSHSL’s boys track and field calendar running through June 6 and the last day to hold section tournament competition set for May 30.

One of the clearest signs of progress came at the United North Central Invite, where New York Mills posted 22 personal bests. Payton Lausten provided one of the standout results, winning the 300-meter hurdles in 1:00.28. In a true team meet, that kind of drop does more than pad an individual record. It can lift the entire scoring total, especially for a small roster where every point counts.

That is the logic behind true team track in Minnesota. The format, created in 1987 by the Minnesota State Track and Field Coaches Association, limits entries and rewards team depth rather than only a few elite performers. For New York Mills, that makes the recent run of personal bests especially important, because improvements in sprints, hurdles, relays and field events can swing the final standings at sections.

The Eagles’ recent stretch also showed why the May meets matter. With competition at United North Central, Wadena-Deer Creek and another trip to Sebeka on the schedule, the team has had repeated chances to find the right combination of speed, consistency and relay execution before the championship round begins. For New York Mills, the next few weeks are less about simply placing well and more about arriving at the postseason with enough momentum to contend when it matters most.
