Otter Invitational Track Meet Returns to Fergus Falls April 9

Coaches Niki Welde and Derek Meyer will send the Fergus Falls Otters onto their home track for the first time this spring when the Otter Invitational opens Wednesday, April 9, at Fergus Falls High School's track complex. Programs from across west-central Minnesota are set to compete, making this one of the region's first meaningful outdoor meets of the prep season.

The timing carries weight for athletes with section and state ambitions. Early-April invitationals are the first real chance to post provisional qualifying marks, and for coaching staffs, they're the clearest opportunity yet to lock in relay combinations and sort out event assignments before section competition starts narrowing the field. Detroit Lakes, Bemidji and Lisbon traveled to Fergus Falls for last year's edition. Willmar and Minnewaska Area have also been part of the field in recent years, giving the meet a cross-conference roster that spans sprints, distance and field disciplines.

For senior athletes, a strong performance at the Otter Invitational goes on the record. MileSplit hosts the meet's event page, posts heat sheets and live results, and maintains meet records — an archival log that college recruiting staffs can access long after the ribbons are handed out.

The meet has appeared on the regional spring calendar in some form almost every year since at least 2017. Beyond competition, the event pulls families and community supporters into Fergus Falls on a weekday, providing a modest lift to downtown restaurants and businesses as the community's sports focus shifts from winter to spring.
