Otter Tail Central reaches historic section 8AA baseball semifinal run

East Grand Forks ended Otter Tail Central’s Section 8AA run with a 9-2 victory on June 2, but the Bulldogs still left the Minnesota State High School League tournament with the deepest postseason finish in program history. For a co-op that includes Battle Lake High School, Henning High School and Underwood High School, the trip to the final three teams in the section marked a new standard rather than a simple late-round loss.

Otter Tail Central earned that place by surviving a demanding bracket. The Bulldogs opened with a 10-9 win over Hawley on May 26, then kept their season alive in elimination play with a 2-1 victory over Thief River Falls/Goodridge on June 1 and a 9-6 win over Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton later that same day. Each win pushed the Bulldogs one round deeper and made the June 2 loss to East Grand Forks the only thing standing between them and a shot at the section title game.

The numbers show how firmly Otter Tail Central established itself in the spring. The Bulldogs finished the regular season 9-10, and earlier season coverage had them at 11-8 overall and 8-6 in the Park Region Conference, good for third place in the league race. That was the backdrop for Ryan Hendrickson’s 10th season as head coach, and it helps explain why the section run carried so much weight in Battle Lake, Henning and Underwood. The Bulldogs were not simply catching a hot week at the end of the year. They were building on a season that had already put them in position to contend.

The program’s history makes the breakthrough even more significant. Otter Tail Central baseball was established in the 1991-92 school year, after Battle Lake and Underwood had already teamed up as the Cyclones beginning in 1986. That long co-op history has now produced a first trip into the final three of Section 8AA, a benchmark that future Bulldog teams will be measured against. The next phase is clear: turn one historic postseason into a standard for staying in the section hunt year after year.
