Otter Tail County sheriff seeks help after mailbox vandalism
Deputies are looking for suspects after multiple mailboxes were vandalized north of Fergus Falls and east of the city Wednesday morning.

Deputies with the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office are asking residents north of Fergus Falls and east of the city to help identify whoever vandalized multiple mailboxes Wednesday morning. The office said the damage appears to be recent, and no suspects have been identified.
The vandalism is more than a broken-post nuisance for homeowners. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service says damaged mailboxes can stop mail delivery, destroy mail inside and put important documents, necessary medicine and other valuables at risk. Postal inspectors investigate crimes against mailboxes and the mail they contain, and federal destruction of property can bring up to three years in jail and a fine of up to $250,000.
The incident drew local attention after iNewZ-TV aired a video report on May 13. Valley News Live reported the vandalism was reported Wednesday morning, adding that the damage was found in an area north of Fergus Falls and east of the city. For nearby homeowners, the immediate cost can include replacing the mailbox itself, along with posts, house-number markers and any other broken signage.

Otter Tail County has dealt with mailbox vandalism before. In December 2022, deputies investigated a case on Leek Lake Drive east of Vergas after a vehicle ran over multiple mailboxes. That incident affected six separate addresses and damaged mailboxes, E911 number signs, posts and other signage, underscoring how quickly a prank or reckless drive can turn into a costly cleanup for several households at once.
Residents who saw suspicious activity in the Fergus Falls area on Wednesday morning or who have information about the damage can contact the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office also posts a daily activity report that is updated every day and includes incident logs and calls for service, giving the public another way to track new reports as investigators work to identify the suspects.
