Otter Tail Social Security Disability Advocates marked its move to 125 W Lincoln Ave, Suite 17B, with an open house and ribbon cutting in Fergus Falls on Friday, May 1, a small relocation with outsized value for people trying to sort out disability claims, paperwork and deadlines.

The Fergus Falls Area Chamber of Commerce listed the open house from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., with the ribbon cutting at 9 a.m., giving the new Lincoln Avenue space a public debut in a downtown location that is easier to spot and simpler to reach than a more obscure office. For residents dealing with health problems, limited transportation or the strain of waiting on federal benefits, a visible local office can mean the difference between getting help quickly and putting off an application or appeal.

Otter Tail Social Security Disability Advocates says it helps people navigate the Social Security Disability application process, gather the documents needed to file, and improve approval odds. Minnesota’s Department of Human Services says contracted Social Security advocacy services can also help with initial applications, appeals, hearings and continuing disability reviews, while making sure people apply for every benefit they qualify for. That kind of one-on-one help matters in a county where claimants often have to deal with distant systems and dense paperwork while managing a disability at the same time.

Alex Kutzke, who returned home to Fergus Falls and saw a need for local, compassionate support, has already helped several people get benefits during the office’s first year. A local business listing says the office opened in 2024, showing that the service is still relatively new even as it settles into the community. The new Lincoln Avenue address gives the business a more established footprint as more residents learn where to turn for help with claims, appeals and document gathering.

The programs themselves differ in important ways. Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, provides monthly payments to people whose condition affects their ability to work, but eligibility depends on being insured through enough work credits and recent work covered by Social Security taxes. Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, provides monthly payments to people with disabilities and older adults who have little or no income or resources. For 2026, the federal SSI benefit rate is $994 a month for an individual and $1,491 for a couple, effective Jan. 1. In Fergus Falls, the new office puts that help within easier reach.
