Perham boys golf posts season-best score at section preview
Perham’s 335 at Bemidji was its second-best score of the spring, a sign the Yellowjackets are sharpening before postseason golf.

Perham’s boys golf team put together a needed step forward at one of the most revealing stops on the spring schedule, carding a 335 and finishing sixth at the Boys Section 8 preview at Bemidji Town and Country Club.
That score was Perham’s second-best team round of the season, a measurable gain at the right time. Section previews matter because they show a lineup how it stacks up against likely postseason competition before the scores carry extra weight, and the Yellowjackets used Wednesday’s round to find out where they still can gain strokes before section play arrives.
The benchmark is clear. At the same venue in last year’s Section 8 preview, Perham finished second with a 322, behind East Grand Forks at 320 and ahead of Thief River Falls at 323. The 335 at Bemidji left the Yellowjackets farther from the front of the field than they were a year ago, but it also showed they have moved closer to their own best work again after a season of building toward this point.

That progress matters in a small-school program where every scorer counts. Perham entered the season with head coach Peder Butenhoff in his sixth year leading the program, and the roster returned Reid Aakre and Aiden Vetsch along with six other letter winners who had varsity experience. Those returning pieces give the Yellowjackets a base to build on, and a 335 in a section preview suggests the group is finding better balance as the spring goes on.
The timing adds context as well. Boys golf practice began March 16 under Minnesota State High School League rules, the first available contest date was March 26, and June 2 is the last day to hold section tournament or competition. Wednesday’s preview, scheduled for 9 a.m. at Bemidji Town and Country Club, sat squarely in the middle of that postseason build-up and gave Perham a direct look at the course it may need to conquer when the stakes are higher.

Bemidji Town and Country Club’s May calendar also lists Region 8A and 8AA preview events and the Region 8A tournament, underscoring that this is one of the places where the section race will be decided. Perham’s latest round did not put it in the lead, but it did show the Yellowjackets are still moving in the right direction when the season is asking for a peak.
