Perham boys golf takes second at Hawley Heart O’ Lakes meet
Perham survived a cold, windy day at Hawley Golf Club and still shot 338 for second place, a strong early sign the Yellowjackets can contend in the Heart O’ Lakes.

Perham’s boys golf team answered an early-season test with a score that says more than a place on the leaderboard. The Yellowjackets shot 338 and finished second at the Hawley Heart O’ Lakes meet on Monday, April 20, at Hawley Golf Club, a result that looks even stronger after a cold, windy day turned every hole into a fight for control.
That kind of finish matters for Perham because the Yellowjackets entered the spring with real conference expectations, not just hopes of improvement. Peder Butenhoff was starting his sixth season as head coach, and he had pointed to Hawley and Staples-Motley as the main Heart O’ Lakes contenders. A runner-up finish at Hawley, against one of the conference’s expected front-runners, gives Perham a concrete early marker in a league race that often separates quickly.
The Yellowjackets also brought back important experience. Reid Aakre and Aiden Vetsch were identified in the preseason as returning leaders, and Perham had three players reach the Section Tournament last season as the program finished third in the Heart O’ Lakes Conference. That background made Monday’s 338 more than a single good round. It suggested a group that already knows how to compete in pressure meets and is learning how to do it again after the winter break.

Weather is always part of the story in Minnesota golf, and Butenhoff has said the spring schedule can be brutal because practice time is limited and outdoor reps are hard to replace. The Hawley round fit that pattern. Cold air and wind can change club selection, distance control and putting pace, and teams that stay patient usually separate themselves from those still trying to find rhythm. Perham did enough of that to stay near the top of the field.
The result also gives Otter Tail County readers a useful benchmark for what comes next. Perham High School is listed by the Minnesota State High School League with an enrollment of 473 and conference affiliations in the Heart O’ Lakes and Mid-State conferences, a reminder that the Yellowjackets are trying to stay competitive in a small-school setting where depth and consistency matter. With conference meets at Perham Lakeside Golf Course on April 22 and in Staples on April 23, the Hawley finish became an early indicator that Perham may be building toward something more than a solid start.
