Western Avenue closes for pipe installation in Fergus Falls

Western Avenue north of Highway 210 in Fergus Falls closed July 22 for underground pipe installation, interrupting a busy connector near the city’s west interchange. MnDOT said the shutdown is scheduled to last through Sunday, July 27, weather permitting, as part of the ongoing Hwy 210/I-94 west junction reconstruction project.

The closure affects a portion of Western Avenue just north of Highway 210, a stretch used by drivers moving between local streets and Interstate 94. That puts a familiar route in the middle of a construction zone that already has been reshaping traffic patterns around the Fergus Falls interchange.

MnDOT said the work is needed to install underground pipe across the roadway. In a project like this, pipe installation is one of the utility and drainage steps that has to happen before larger roadway reconstruction can move forward, making the closure part of the project’s staged buildout rather than a standalone fix.

The Western Avenue shutdown comes after a series of earlier changes on the west junction. MnDOT held an open house in Fergus Falls on April 23 to lay out the Hwy 210/I-94 interchange project, and major traffic changes began May 4, including ramp closures and new traffic patterns. A July 17 update from Fergus Now said crews were still advancing the reconstruction despite extreme heat, smoke and heavy rainfall, including work on the Redwood Lane roundabout.

For Fergus Falls drivers, the practical effect is another temporary reroute in an area already under active construction. People heading through the Highway 210 corridor, especially those connecting to I-94, will need to adjust trips around the closure while work crews occupy the roadway. Nearby businesses and neighborhoods around the interchange can expect the usual pressure that comes with a narrowed access point and shifting traffic flow.
