Zierden sets school record as Otters open strong at Harrington Invite
Zierden’s school record gave Fergus Falls an instant spring benchmark, and the Otters backed it with a second-place girls finish and third on the boys side at home.

Zierden gave Fergus Falls the kind of opening-day mark that can shape a season, setting a new school record as the Otters opened the Harrington Early Bird Invite with a strong showing at Otter Stadium.
The home meet was held Thursday, April 16, at Fergus Falls High School, with field events beginning at 3 p.m. and track events at 3:30 p.m. After the Otters first reported to practice on March 9, the early-season test came quickly, and it came against a sizable field that included A-B-E, Barnesville, Breckenridge, Detroit Lakes, Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, Ottertail Central and Perham.
Perham swept both team titles, but Fergus Falls stayed in the mix on both sides of the meet. The Otters finished second in the girls competition and third in the boys standings, a result that showed the program already had enough depth to compete at home against some of the area’s most familiar rivals.
On the boys side, the team standings underscored how close the top of the meet was. Perham scored 154 points, followed by Detroit Lakes with 129 and Fergus Falls with 124. Ottertail Central finished fourth with 108, Breckenridge had 75 and Hillcrest Lutheran Academy scored 10. With those numbers, the Otters were right in the middle of a competitive early-season pack, and the difference between second and third was small enough to keep the rest of the spring interesting.

For local fans, the meet also offered an early look at the matchups that should carry the most weight as the schedule builds toward May. Perham left Fergus Falls with both team wins, Detroit Lakes showed enough strength to stay ahead of the Otters on the boys side, and Ottertail Central remained close enough to be part of the weekly conversation in Otter Tail County. Those are the programs and meets that will tell the clearest story about whether Fergus Falls can turn an early record and a strong home opener into lasting momentum.
The Harrington Early Bird Invite was one of the first home meets on the 2026 schedule, which made Zierden’s record feel bigger than a single result. It gave the Otters a measurable benchmark, a competitive start and a reason to believe the spring could build from here.
