Chris Bates of Mountain Comprehensive Health Named 2026 Advocate of the Year
Chris Bates of Mountain Comprehensive Health, which runs the Owsley County Medical Clinic in Booneville, earned a national 2026 Advocate of the Year honor.

Christopher (Chris) Bates, MPA, a senior leader with Mountain Comprehensive Health Corporation, was named a 2026 Advocate of the Year by Advocates for Community Health, a national organization that advances policy on behalf of community health centers across the country.
Bates serves as Corporate Compliance Officer at Mountain Comprehensive Health and holds seats on the organization's Funding and Membership Committees, two of the bodies that shape how Advocates for Community Health pushes on issues including Medicaid access, workforce development, 340B drug pricing reform, and financial sustainability for clinics like those MCHC operates throughout eastern Kentucky. The Owsley County Medical Clinic in Booneville is among the facilities in that network.
The recognition places Bates alongside a cohort of community health center leaders from across the country. Others listed among the 2026 honorees include Nekeisha Afful, Chief Business Officer at Morris Heights Health Center in New York; Kelly Carlson, Chief Administrative Officer at Columbia Basin Health Association in Washington; Joao Faustino, AVP of Government Affairs and Advocacy at Sun River in New York; and Brynn Felix, General Counsel at Peninsula Community Health Services in Washington. Each serves on national policy and governance committees through Advocates for Community Health, working on issues ranging from value-based care payment reform to emerging regulatory challenges.

For a county like Owsley, where geographic isolation and persistent poverty have long complicated healthcare access, having a local health system leader recognized at the national advocacy level carries direct relevance. MCHC's clinic in Booneville represents one of the more significant primary care resources available to county residents, and the policy work Bates engages in through committees on funding and membership directly affects the federal and state support streams that keep such facilities operating.
Mountain Comprehensive Health Corporation is referred to in some Advocates for Community Health materials as Mountain Comprehensive Health Center; both names point to the Kentucky-based organization Bates leads, and the formal legal name is pending confirmation. Advocates for Community Health is set to hold its 2026 Annual Member Meeting later this year, where recognized leaders and committee members typically convene alongside the CHC Best Practices Showcase.
