Estill County Routs Owsley County 18-1, Owsley Drops Second Straight
The Owls fall to 0-2 after Estill County erupts for 18 runs in a lopsided home loss at Booneville on Monday.

Estill County's Engineers wasted no time imposing their will at Owsley County High School on Monday, rolling to an 18-1 victory in a conference matchup that left the Owls winless through two games to start the 2026 season.
The defeat dropped Owsley County's record to 0-2, the second consecutive loss for head coach William Gay's squad after the Owls fell 18-1 to Berea on Wednesday in their season opener. Back-to-back blowout losses to open a season are a painful reminder of the margin the Owls must close to compete in their district, and Monday's game at home in Booneville offered no relief.
Estill County's performance in the win pushed their own record to 1-1 on the young season. The Engineers, known in preview material as a program that has historically dominated this matchup, showed again why they enter conference play with such confidence against Owsley County. Estill County is a perfect 10-0 against Owsley County since April of 2018, a run of dominance that now extends more than eight years without a loss to the Owls.
The 17-run margin on Monday was not an outlier in this rivalry. In their previous meeting, back in May of 2024, Estill County made off with an 18-1 win as well, an identical score that underscores the consistency of the Engineers' edge over their Breathitt County neighbors. Going further back, Owsley County lost to Estill County 15-0 on May 17, 2025, played at Powell County High School.
No individual box score details or pitching lines were immediately available from Monday's game, but the Owls' roster includes seniors such as Koby Smith alongside underclassmen including sophomores and freshmen who are still growing into the varsity level under Gay's direction. The schedule ahead lists Clay County among the upcoming opponents, giving Owsley County the opportunity to find its footing before another likely encounter with Estill County later in the season.
For a program that went 10-19 a season ago, the 0-2 start is not unexpected, but the combined 36 runs surrendered across the first two games signals that pitching and defensive execution remain the most urgent concerns heading into the heart of the spring schedule.
