KY 846 to close Tuesday in Owsley County for drainage work

A one-day closure on KY 846 cut through a familiar Booneville-area travel path in Owsley County, forcing drivers to reroute for school runs, work commutes, deliveries, medical appointments and routine trips into town. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews shut the road near milepoint 1.2 to replace a drainage structure, with work scheduled to start at 8 a.m. and run until 8:30 p.m., weather permitting.

The practical impact was immediate in a county where many trips depend on a small number of state roads. KY 846 runs through the Booneville and Island City area and along creek corridors, and the state’s route map shows how closely those roads track local terrain. In a county of 4,051 residents at the 2020 Census and about 197 square miles of land, even a short shutdown can ripple through the day for families, employers, emergency services and school transportation.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s District 10 office in Jackson is responsible for Owsley County road maintenance and construction, which is why the closure came through the district rather than a county-only office. That same district has handled similar work on KY 846 before. In an earlier notice, the state said the road would close between mile markers 1 and 2 for a drainage pipe replacement, with no marked detour posted and an alternate route suggested through KY 1503 and KY 1350 via Island City.

For Owsley County School District, the timing mattered because the transportation department operates from Booneville at 14 Old Hwy 11. Any closure on KY 846 can affect bus routing, parent drop-offs and staff travel depending on where students and drivers need to cross the road network. The route also matters for residents living beyond the closure point, who may have only a limited set of back roads to reach Booneville, Island City or other parts of the county.

The drainage work itself points to a recurring maintenance need in the hills and hollows of eastern Kentucky. Replacing a drainage structure is meant to restore the road’s water-handling system before runoff can undermine the surface or shoulders, a problem that can quickly turn into erosion or washouts if left alone. For Owsley County drivers, the closure was not just a brief inconvenience; it was an all-day reminder that one small structure can control access across a wide stretch of daily life.
