Owsley County hosts Buckhorn, aiming to extend series edge
Owsley County took a 9-1 series edge into Buckhorn’s visit to Booneville, where both teams were trying to shake off recent losses and reset their late-season push.

Buckhorn’s trip to Booneville on Thursday, May 14, with first pitch set for 5:30 p.m., gave Owsley County another home chance to protect a series edge that has grown hard to ignore. The Owls had already beaten the Wildcats 11-5 in March, and Buckhorn had gone just 1-9 against Owsley County since April 2019.
The matchup arrived with both programs looking for a cleaner finish to the regular season. Buckhorn entered at 6-26 after a 5-1 loss to Cordia, while Owsley County stood at 10-17 after a setback against Jackson City. Those records made the Booneville game more than a routine mid-May date on the calendar; it was a chance for one side to steady itself and for the other to keep a favorable run going in a series that has tilted heavily toward Owsley County.

Owsley County also carried a clear statistical concern into the game. The Owls had been allowing 10.37 runs per contest, a number that has left too little margin for error when games turn into track meets. Against Buckhorn, that meant pitching and defense mattered as much as the bats, especially with the possibility of another high-scoring night against a familiar opponent.
For Booneville fans, the appeal was straightforward. Owsley County had the better recent head-to-head history, Buckhorn was trying to recover from a lopsided loss, and both teams were still searching for momentum as the season moved toward its final stretch. A win would have strengthened Owsley County’s hold on the series and added another boost of confidence at home; a loss would have left the Owls looking back at missed chances in a game that felt like a useful barometer for what remained ahead.
