Owsley County joins Kentucky summer reading, math boost program
Owsley County students will get free books and digital math games at summer meal sites, part of a 34-district Kentucky boost effort.

Owsley County joined Kentucky’s Summer Boost: Reading and Mathematics Program, putting local students in line for free books and digital math games at summer meal sites as families look for ways to keep learning going through the long break.
The program included 34 school districts and 35 sites across the state in a partnership between the Kentucky Department of Education and the Summer Food Service Program. Each participating meal program is set to receive roughly 1,000 books to hand out, along with digital access to math games designed to keep children engaged in reading and numeracy between school years.
For Owsley County families, the appeal is practical as much as academic. Meals and learning materials will be delivered through the same summer network, making it easier for parents to pick up books where children are already receiving food. That approach matters in a rural county where access to tutoring, camps and other enrichment options can be limited, and where keeping students connected to reading and math over the summer can help prevent learning loss.

The support is meant to do more than fill time. It gives students a way to stay in the habit of reading while also offering parents simple tools to use at home, with the digital math resources providing another layer of practice during the months when school is out. The state’s Summer Support webpages also point families to literacy, mathematics, gifted and talented, goal-setting and tracking materials.
Parents who want to make sure their children are included should contact their local Summer Food Service department for meal site information and access details. With Owsley County part of the statewide effort, summer learning support will be tied directly to routines many families already depend on, a setup that could make the difference between a summer slide and a stronger start when school begins again.
