Residents who rely on Perry County Memorial Hospital for late-night and weekend emergencies may soon be waiting on a new face in the ER. The Tell City hospital is advertising a full-time emergency room staff nurse opening, a 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. position that points to the ongoing need to keep front-line care staffed around the clock.

The posting is more than a routine hiring notice. Perry County Memorial Hospital says its emergency department is physician-staffed 24 hours a day and is prepared to handle heart attacks, strokes, musculoskeletal injuries and other emergencies. In a county of 19,170 people, with Tell City home to 7,506 residents, that kind of coverage is central to whether urgent care stays local or has to be sought farther away.

The job listing calls for a graduate of an accredited school of nursing, an active Indiana registered nurse license, and current BLS/CPR certification. It also requires competency in ECG rhythm-strip interpretation and notes that ACLS and PALS training is required or must be obtained within one year of hire. Those credentials matter in an ER that has to make fast decisions when seconds count.

Perry County Memorial Hospital says it is a 25-bed acute-care critical access hospital and one of Perry County’s largest employers, with more than 315 workers. The hospital has served the community since 1950 and moved into its current facility at 8885 State Road 237 in 2015. The latest opening adds another clue about the staffing demands of a small rural hospital that still has to function like a full-service emergency gateway for the area.

The hospital’s role goes beyond the ER. Its EMS department says it provides around-the-clock, dual-ambulance staffing and operates a fleet of five ambulances across two locations. That means the same health system is responsible not only for bringing patients in, but also for keeping emergency transport ready across Perry County.

Jared Stimpson has served as president and CEO since May 15, 2023, after Perry County Memorial Hospital affiliated with Deaconess Health System on Jan. 1, 2023. The hospital’s leadership team also includes Chief Nursing Officer Kayla Gehlhausen and Chief Medical Officer Joshua Poos, M.D., underscoring that the ER vacancy sits inside a larger staffing structure built to keep emergency care available in Tell City, day and night.
