The Appalachian Arts Alliance’s annual Kentucky Derby party has become one of Hazard’s most reliable civic stops, a night that mixes fundraiser, social event and public gathering in a city where recurring community spaces matter. What began as a local celebration around the first Saturday in May has turned into a fixture that keeps pulling Perry Countians into the same room for arts, prizes and a shared Kentucky tradition.

This year’s party featured a silent auction, a DJ and a casino-style area with play money, with winnings at the end of the night set aside for door-prize drawings. That format gives the event a broader purpose than entertainment alone. It brings in money for the Appalachian Arts Alliance while giving supporters an easy entry point into the organization’s work, whether they come for the racing theme, the auction or the chance to spend an evening at one of the county’s more visible gathering spots.

The party’s track record shows how firmly it has settled into Hazard’s public calendar. In 2024, nearly 300 people attended the Alliance’s fifth annual Derby party at Hazard Community and Technical College, and Executive Director Tim Deaton-Conway said the fundraiser was helping provide operational funding for the organization. That same year, another local listing said the fifth annual event was set for May 3, showing how the Alliance has used Derby season as a dependable annual anchor.

Earlier versions of the party were centered at The Art Station on Main Street in downtown Hazard, a location that tied the event closely to the city’s core. A 2022 report said the Alliance held its third annual Derby party there on May 7, with live music, a casino and an appetizer buffet catered by Big Blue Smokehouse. That event also marked the organization’s 10-year anniversary, underscoring how the Derby party had already become part of a larger growth story. A 2021 post advertised the second annual party for May 7 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the ArtStation, with races, a casino, a cash bar and appetizers, and a 2020 City of Hazard post said the annual party was being hosted by and benefiting the Alliance.

Taken together, those recurring events show more than a social tradition. They show an arts organization that has become one of Hazard’s most dependable public hubs, using a familiar Kentucky celebration to keep downtown active and keep the Alliance visible in everyday civic life.
