Annaline Jackson's Buzzer Free Throws Seal Marvell 46-45 Victory
Annaline Jackson sank two free throws at the buzzer to give Marvell a 46-45 win over Tunica, a finish that energized Phillips County fans and highlighted the value of girls' sports in the community.

With the game tied and the clock expired, Annaline Jackson stepped to the line and sank two free throws to lift Marvell to a 46-45 victory over the Tunica Lady Blue Devils. The finish in Tunica sent a roar through fans who packed the gym and underscored how local high school sports bring Phillips County residents together.
Marvell led 9-7 after the first quarter and stretched the margin in the second, riding defense and timely scoring to a 28-11 halftime advantage. Tunica fought back in the second half, trimming the deficit to a one-possession game by the closing minutes. Marvell held a 34-27 lead after three quarters, setting up a tense final stretch.
Tunica grabbed a one-point lead in the final seconds when Lindsey Wallace drove in for a layup with 6.8 seconds remaining and was fouled by Jackson. Wallace missed the free throw but grabbed her own rebound and missed a follow-up layup. Briley Bartlett secured the rebound for Marvell, and head coach Cathy Wilson called timeout with 3.0 seconds left to draw up a play from 90 feet away.
Marvell inbounded from its defensive end, and Sydney Medford hit Jackson on the catch. Jackson, who had hit a half-court shot the previous night against North Sunflower Academy, was fouled as she launched a desperate heave. After missing the first shot, Jackson calmly sank the next two to seal the 46-45 win and send the crowd to its feet.
"Even though there was only three seconds left, it’s never over until the clock hits zero," Jackson said. "I just did what I’ve trained all year to do. I blocked out the noise, prayed to God, and I went to work. God proves time and time again that He makes possible out of the impossible, and sometimes we’re blessed enough that we get to live it in real time."
Jackson finished with 20 points to lead Marvell. Briley Bartlett had 8 points and Dru McCormick added 7. Isabella Bartlett scored 5, Bentley McCoy had 4, and Sydney Medford contributed 2. Tunica was paced by Andy Kate Graves with 17 points and Sidney Turner with 15.
Beyond the box score, the game matters to Phillips County for several reasons. Close, dramatic contests like this draw families, alumni, and neighbors into the gym, creating social ties that support local youth. Consistent access to girls' athletics promotes physical activity, builds teamwork and leadership skills, and supports mental health for adolescent athletes. For a rural community where public gathering spaces and youth opportunities are limited, games become communal health assets as much as sporting events.
Policymakers and school leaders can take lessons from nights like this about investing in safe facilities, transportation for student-athletes, and equal resources for girls' programs so every town can compete and communities can benefit. For Marvell, the victory provides momentum and a rallying point for players and fans alike as the season continues.
